What drives matcha wholesale price per kg
Matcha pricing varies a lot between suppliers and it's not always clear why. Here's what actually moves the number, so you can compare quotes properly.
Grade is the biggest factor
Ceremonial-grade matcha — made from the youngest, shade-grown leaves and stone-milled for a fine, smooth texture — costs meaningfully more than culinary grade, which is grown and processed for use in lattes, baking, and blended drinks rather than whisked on its own. If a quote seems unusually low, check which grade is actually being priced.
Harvest timing and year-to-year supply
Matcha is an agricultural product. Early first-harvest (ichibancha) leaves are more limited than later harvests, and total supply shifts year to year with weather and demand. Wholesale pricing reflects that — it isn't static the way a manufactured good's price is.
Order volume and MOQ
Per-kg pricing typically improves at higher order volumes, but the more useful question for a new buyer is the minimum order — can you start with a sample or small trial batch before committing to a full pallet? A supplier's willingness to work with a smaller first order tells you a lot about how they'll treat the relationship going forward.
Packaging and private label
Bulk bags priced for repacking cost less than pre-packaged retail-ready units. Custom or private-label packaging adds cost on top of the base matcha price — factor that in separately when comparing a bulk quote to a private-label quote.
Shipping and logistics
Matcha degrades with heat, light, and air exposure, so how it's shipped (temperature control, vacuum-sealed vs. standard packing) and where it's shipping to both affect landed cost. A cheaper per-kg price with slow, unprotected shipping can end up costing more in product quality.
